Your questions matter.
HERE ARE A FEW ANSWERS TO HELP YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AS WE WALK THIS PATH TOGETHER.
A doula [doo-luh] is a trained support companion who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational care during pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period. While not a medical professional, a doula walks alongside you through one of life’s most powerful transitions, offering encouragement, comfort measures, and guidance tailored to your unique needs. The word "doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "woman's servant" a beautiful reminder that this role is rooted in care, compassion, and presence.
Obstetricians and midwives are trained medical professionals who oversee the clinical aspects of your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. They monitor your health, perform tests, manage labor and delivery, and respond to any complications that may arise. Their top priority is always the physical safety and well-being of you and your baby.
Doulas, on the other hand, are non-clinical support professionals who walk alongside you and your family to offer continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond. While care providers may offer moments of comfort and guidance, they often can’t stay with you throughout labor, especially in the early stages.
That’s where a doula comes in.
Your doula joins you whenever you need support, whether you’re in early labor at home or deep into active labor. They remain by your side, providing comfort techniques, encouragement, and clarity. While your care provider handles the medical decisions, your doula helps you process what’s happening, ask informed questions, and stay centered and calm.
A doula doesn’t replace your doctor, midwife, or partner; instead, they help create a bridge between you, your care team, and your birth goals, ensuring that your experience is one of support, confidence, and peace.
Yes! My goal is to work as a team with you and your care provider. Your care provider can tell me helpful information like what position the baby is in, which can help us know what positions and tools to use to help your labor progress. Care providers often ask for the doula’s observations on the birth since the doula is with the laboring woman for multiple hours and provides continuity of care. Doulas are trained to provide comfort measures like counter pressure, massage, and breathing techniques. The presence of a doula can help the family feel emotionally supported, and we often serve as a bridge of communication between women, partners, and their care providers so that they can make the best informed decisions for their families.
Absolutely not. As your doula, my role is never to replace your partner but to support both of you. I’m here to encourage, guide, and provide reassurance so your partner can focus fully on loving and supporting you without the stress of managing everything else. During our prenatal meetings, we’ll talk through your preferences and birth goals, and make a plan that helps us work together as a team, creating a calm, connected, and empowered birth experience.
Yes, but I take a limited number of clients each month to ensure I can give each family my full attention and care, especially once I'm on-call for your birth.
I’m available by text, phone, and email—and I make a point to respond quickly, especially once you’re getting close to your due date. During prenatal visits, I check in regularly and help you feel confident and informed.
I offer clear, upfront pricing and flexible packages, whether you’re looking for birth-only support or full-spectrum care. Payment plans are available because every family deserves support, no matter the budget.
A non-refundable deposit holds your spot on my calendar. Payment plans are available, and I’m happy to work with you to make doula care accessible.
I bring both professional training and real-life experience as a mom. While I have formal training (and ongoing education through DONA), I also believe the best doulas combine knowledge with deep intuition and lived wisdom. You’ll get both.
Choosing a doula isn’t just about having a friendly face in the room (though you’ll get that too!)—it’s a proven way to make birth safer, smoother, and more satisfying. Studies show that women who receive continuous support from a doula experience incredible benefits, including:
40% decrease in the use of Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin)
50% decrease in the risk of cesarean birth
12% increase in spontaneous vaginal birth
9% decrease in the use of pain medications
14% decrease in newborns being admitted to special care
34% decrease in dissatisfaction with the birth experience
25% shorter labors
40% reduction in the need for forceps or vacuum assistance
68% of moms are still breastfeeding at 6 weeks postpartum
When you have someone by your side—encouraging you, advocating for you, and helping you feel safe and empowered—it truly makes a difference.
Don't believe me? Check out these studies:
Absolutely. I know that choosing to invest in doula support is a large financial commitment, and I don’t take that lightly.
When you invite me into your story, you're not just hiring a service, you’re gaining a steady, reliable presence through one of the most transformational times of your life. From the moment you say “yes,” I'm here for you via phone, text, or email, ready to answer questions, calm nerves, and cheer you on. Once you reach 37 weeks, we’re officially on-call for you 24/7. That means day or night, we’re just a phone call away when labor begins or when you simply need extra support.
I limit the number of clients I serve each month so I can be fully present and offer the wholehearted care you deserve. This is more than a job, it’s my calling, and it’s my joy to walk with you every step of the way.
As your doula, I come prepared with my “bag of tricks”—a collection of tools and resources designed to bring physical relief, emotional grounding, and a peaceful atmosphere to your birth space. From a TENS unit and rebozo to a heating pad, handheld fan, essential oils, LED candles, and even honey sticks for a little boost, I’ve got you covered. I can also help set the tone with soft lighting, calming music, and anything else that makes you feel held and supported.
But beyond the tools, I bring something even more powerful: prayer. I believe that inviting God into your birth space transforms it. Whether it’s a quiet prayer over you, Spirit-led encouragement, or simply holding space for God’s peace to fill the room, I’m honored to walk with you in both the physical and spiritual rhythms of labor.
We understand that navigating hospital visitor policies can be overwhelming, especially when you're preparing for one of life's most significant moments. Rest assured, we're here to support you every step of the way.
In many Charlotte-area hospitals, doulas are welcomed as part of your birth team. However, policies can vary by facility:
Atrium Health Hospitals (e.g., Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville, University City):Allow up to four visitors during labor and delivery, including your doula.
Novant Health Hospitals (e.g., Presbyterian Medical Center, Ballantyne Medical Center): Require doulas to be registered through their Verified Doula Program. Once registered, doulas are not counted against the visitor limit, allowing you additional support.
Please note that these policies are subject to change, especially during times of heightened health concerns. We recommend contacting your chosen facility directly for the most current information.
At My Birth Friend, we believe that you were built for this journey, but you were never meant to walk it alone. Having a doula by your side ensures that you and your partner receive continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout labor and delivery.
If you have any questions or need assistance understanding your hospital's policies, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to advocate for you and ensure that your birth experience is as peaceful and empowering as possible.

As a Christian, my care is deeply rooted in my faith and the belief that God designed birth with beauty, purpose, and intention. I often incorporate prayer, encouragement, and a Christ-centered approach into my support. While I don't practice or lead other spiritual traditions, I always strive to serve each family with compassion, respect, and grace. If you’re seeking doula care grounded in Biblical truth, I may be a great fit for your journey.
