What does a doula do? A real talk guide to birth support

When I tell people I’m a doula, I usually get one of three responses:
“A do-what now?”
“So you catch the baby, right?”
“OMG I had a doula! Best decision I made.”
If you’re in camp one or two, you’re not alone, and this article is for you.
Let’s break it down, real-talk style. Because birth is beautiful, wild, powerful, and sometimes overwhelming, and you deserve to know who’s in your corner.
First of All… What Is a Doula?
A doula is like a birth fairy godmother, minus the sparkly wand and glass slippers (although I do love a good snack bag and Rebozo).
More officially, a doula is a trained professional who supports you emotionally, physically, and informationally through pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. I don’t deliver babies. I don’t replace your partner. I’m not a midwife. I’m the person quietly handing you a cool washcloth, talking you through a contraction, reminding you that your body isn’t broken, and helping your partner feel like an absolute rockstar.
What a Doula Actually Does (and Doesn’t Do)
Emotional Support
Birth brings all the feelings: joy, fear, excitement, and those “why-is-this-happening-to-me” moments. I’m here for all of it. I listen. I validate. I hold space. And sometimes I cry with you. (It’s fine. I hydrate.)
Physical Support
I know comfort techniques, counterpressure magic, position changes that help labor progress, and when to dim the lights so your nervous system chills out. I bring the calm when everything feels intense.
Partner Support
Your partner is not your doula. They are also becoming a parent, and they need guidance too. I help them help you. I translate birth stuff in the moment, give them breaks, and offer ideas so they can be present, confident, and connected.
Information + Advocacy
Feeling unsure about a procedure? Need help understanding your options? Want someone to help you advocate for what matters to you? That’s where I shine. I don’t speak for you; I help amplify your voice.
What I Don’t Do
Just so we’re clear:
I don’t catch babies.
I don’t give medical advice or make decisions for you.
I don’t judge your birth plan, your pain relief choices, or the number of TikToks you watch in early labor.
I do support you, 100%, no matter what.
Why Does Having a Doula Matter?
Here’s the short version: you’re more likely to have a positive birth experience with a doula on your team.
Seriously, research backs it up:
39% decrease in the risk of cesarean
15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
31% decrease in the use of Pitocin
Higher satisfaction, more confidence, and less fear
Your birth story matters. Your experience matters. And having someone who knows birth and knows you can make all the difference.
Is a Doula Right for You?
You might want a doula if:
You’re planning an unmedicated birth and want support.
You’re planning an epidural and want comfort + advocacy before and after.
You’re having a scheduled cesarean and want help navigating the emotional side.
You want your partner to feel confident and supported.
You want someone in your corner who’s been there before, and who’s there just for you.
